who is lost?

Today, our pastor talked about inviting and investing in the lives of "lost" people. It was a great sermon and has challenged me to think about my involvement in the larger community outside of the seminary & church, which is minimal at best right now. However, I was also reminded of a quote by Brian McLaren about who we should truly consider "lost":
"Sometimes I wonder if we would be wiser to apply the term ‘lost’ to ourselves. After all, if you send a letter to someone and it never arrives, you say the letter is lost. Similarly, God has sent us into the world as ambassadors and agents of God’s love, and yet many of us have never really arrived at our destination. So, in that light, who is lost – them or us?” (More Ready Than You Realize, McLaren, 58).

The point of this quote is not to accuse anyone of not being right, but to open our eyes to our role in God's Kingdom. Are you lost?
