I found this quote extremely helpful:
Frederick Buechner defines calling as "where your deep desire meets the world's great need!" (Wishful Thinking: A Seeker's ABC, 1993, p. 19)
Some may want to overspiritualize their decision for a certain job. While I know that God has plans for me, I know that He has given me choice, even in the arena of jobs.
My deep desire can be expressed in scripture: Isaiah 61:1-6 (preach good news, heal brokenhearted, proclaim freedom for captives, release from darkness for prisoners, God's favor, comfort those mourning, prepare people to be strong in the faith, and encourage all to be ministers- in their daily lives)
The world's great need: something that fulfills desires, hurts, understanding of how the world works
Though this is very simplistic and my thoughts, which are certainly not the same as everyone else, I find my calling here best represented in one as a pastor.
I just thought I would share this with friends and family as I continue to understand myself, God, and how I will respond to Him each day.
Future post: I promise to get off this "serious" kick that I've been on the past few posts, but as I've read (wait, let me check) 742 pages (seminary texts- mind you) to this point and I'm 516 pages behind what I need to read before tomorrow, I am in a serious mindset. I'm learning this little thing called "skimming" that many people dost profess to be "great."
So, my next post will be on the greatest cd that I've bought lately (okay, it's the only cd I've bought since DC*B: B Collision came out, but it's still one of the best cd's I've heard in a long time).
Future, Future Post: Sometime soon I'll get around to letting you in on some of the cool seminary teaching I've been learning, not just this mushy gushy interpersonal crap (can you tell I'm not big on emotions?).
Fantasy Rant: Somehow in the last day of the semi-final round of fantasy baseball, my team managed to go from winning 10 of 16, to only securing 7 (my opponent ended up with 9- who is obviously a much better fantasy sports competitor than blog updater). Do I even need to say that when I casually checked the scores this morning that I almost yelled in shock of the sudden loss? Durn semi-final losses in baseball...
